Shirley’s work is inspired by a lifelong love of nature, both on land and under the sea. Creating sculptures and functional forms in stoneware clay, she hand-builds each piece using coils and slabs. Current work focuses on two themes: stacks of British garden birds arranged in free-standing totem-like forms, and marine life influenced by a passion for scuba-diving. Shirley’s functional forms often feature sculpted or underglaze decorated creatures – transforming everyday pots into functional pieces of art. These pieces often include details such as crustacea, octopus and turtles, reflecting the colour and diversity of tropical seas.

Her love of travel also breathes life into wall-mounted animal portraits, each a quiet tribute to creatures that inspire awe. Whether focusing on local wildlife or underwater worlds, the aim is to celebrate the beauty of the natural environment and share a sense of connection with animals.
