Having started painting aged 14, John Percy studied graphic design at Ravensbourne College of Art, then worked in animation for Film & TV. He began to paint again in 1985.

Through the 1990’s John’s work sold in London but he abruptly stopped painting in 1998 after a personal annus horribilis. He returned to graphic design for 15 years until he began painting again in 2013, picking up exactly where he had left off in 1998.

John’s abstract paintings explore process as metaphor working from random starting points via decisions made from choices available which may then be disrupted by chance events. He also draws a parallel with musical composition where painting is the same if we substitute marks and colours for sounds. Harmony and rhythm are essential formal ends to achieve while meaning exists in the intention of the artist and in the eye and intellect of the viewer.
